Day #411: Miserere mei, Deus

This is a short post. I haven’t written in a while.

As MND slowly beats the shit out of me, it’s harder to summon the energy to do it.

I take solace in listening to music. I’ve always loved music.

Of all the various art forms, music hits me the hardest – right in the feels.

I was a semi-talented guitarist before my left hand turned into a floppy sock. But MND can’t stop me listening to it.

Soul, classical, blues, house, videogame soundtracks – my taste is all over the shop. I started a list of my top 100 songs to pass on to my son and I’m already at number 126.

But this piece… this is something special.

I was written nearly 400 years ago by an Italian Catholic priest, who must have taken something fantastic before he penned it.

It was so good, it was rumoured that Pope Urban VIII forbid it to be played anywhere other than the Sistine Chapel. Mozart famously first heard it during a Wednesday morning service, and later that day, wrote it down entirely from memory.

My only request of you is to put on some headphones.

Enjoy.

  2. Canโ€™t help thinking that your grandfather may well have sung this beauty when he was in the choir at New College Oxford the best part of 100 years ago!
